Applications are invited for 2 PhD student in Cognitive Neuroscience for the project
“Treatment expectation on pain and emotion” in Hamburg

Research topic
The research focus will be on combining neuroimaging (fMRI, EEG) and behavioural
measurements (including virtual reality) to examine the neural basis for the generation of
expectations on pain and emotion. The project is part of the SFB "Treatment expectation" of
the University of Hamburg and other Universities in Germany (www.treatment-
expectation.de). As a University of Excellence, Hamburg is one of the strongest research
universities in Germany.

Location
The project (supervised by Prof. Dr. Michael Rose) will be based at the Institute of Systems
Neuroscience (head: Prof Christian Büchel) at the University Medical Center Hamburg-
Eppendorf in Hamburg, Germany.

Requirements for the PhD position:

 A Master of Science or an equivalent degree in neuroscience, cognitive science,
psychology, or a related discipline.

 Experience in programming and in analysing neuroimaging experiments is a big plus.
 Keen interest in experimental approaches to study pain processing in the human brain.
 Motivation to work independently as well as in a team environment.

Applications will be accepted until the position is filled. Salary depends on experience and is
based on German regulations (TVöD-VKA-13 for PhD positions with the factor 75%). The
appointment will be initially for 4 years with the possibility for continuation starting optimally
