PhD position (E13, 75%; 3 years) in Developmental Cognitive Neuroscience - Hearing Research (f/m/d)

The PhD position is part of the German Research Foundation (DFG)-funded project „Enriched speech to support language development in children with sensorineural hearing loss: neural and behavioral evidence”. The successful candidate will work on an independent project under the supervision of the PI Prof. Claudia Männel and her team at the Charité - Universitätsmedizin Berlin. Within the PhD project on remediating effects of impaired speech processing in hearing loss, the candidate will be collecting data in a series of EEG and eyetracking studies alongside behavioral measures of speech production and standardized tests. The study population are children between 1 and 4 years of age with and without permanent hearing loss.

Essentials

  • Master's degree in (developmental) psychology, (psycho-/clinical-) linguistics, cognitive science, or a related field (or equivalent professional experience)
  • High motivation to conduct interdisciplinary empirical research at the intersection of developmental cognitive neuroscience and clinical linguistics
  • Excellent collaborative and communication skills
  • Excellent written and spoken English 
  • Knowledge of German (at least B1 level) or willingness to obtain this knowledge upon starting the position (for running studies with German-speaking children)

Desirables

  • Experience with experimental linguistics and/or cognitive (neuro)science research
  • Experience with running experimental studies with children
  • Experience with quantitative data analysis (e.g., Matlab, R) and sound processing (e.g., Praat)
  • Knowledge on childhood hearing loss and its consequences on language and communication
  • Knowledge on phonology and its acquisition
