PhD student (f/m/d) in Cognitive and Clinical Neuroscience

The non-invasive DBS lab at the Department of Neurology, University Hospital Würzburg (UKW), led by Dr. Maximilian Wessel, in collaboration with the Behaviour and Brain Lab at the Faculty of Human Sciences, Julius-Maximilians-University (JMU) Würzburg, led by Prof. Dr. Mona Garvert, invites applications for a

PhD student (f/m/d) in Cognitive and Clinical Neuroscience
(TV-L, 65%)

This position is part of a funded research project investigating the interplay of striatal and hippocampal processing in decision-making and Parkinson’s Disease (PD) using cutting-edge neuroimaging and neurostimulation methods. The contract will begin as soon as possible and is fixed term for an initial period of 3 years. Remuneration is based on the TV-L (Collective Agreement for the Public Service of German Federal States).

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop and execute independent research projects combining cognitive computational neuroscience and brain stimulation.
  • Recruit and test participants, including healthy individuals and PD patients for advanced neurostimulation studies, particularly transcranial temporal interference stimulation (tTIS).
  • Analyze behavioral and neuroimaging data.
  • Present findings at conferences, prepare manuscripts for publication in international peer-reviewed journals.
  • Contribute to teaching activities (optional).

The following qualifications are required:

  • A university degree (Master’s or equivalent) in neuroscience, psychology, biomedical engineering, medicine or a related subject.
  • Prior research experience, ideally with behavioural experiments in humans, brain stimulation or computational neuroscience tools
  • A strong affinity to and ideally experience with coding (in Matlab, Python, R or Javascript) and statistics
  • Excellent analytical, organizational and interpersonal skills, enjoys working in an interdisciplinary team
  • Proficiency in English and German

Preferred Qualifications:

We offer

The successful candidate will join a collaborative research project at the interface of cognitive and clinical neuroscience, co-led by Dr. Maximilian Wessel (Department of Neurology, UKW) and Prof. Dr. Mona Garvert (Faculty of Human Sciences, JMU). This includes probing neural mechanisms underlying cognition using advanced behavioral paradigms, computational modeling, and transcranial temporal interference stimulation (tTIS). This interdisciplinary setting offers a unique opportunity to contribute to impactful, high-quality research at the intersection of cognitive and clinical neuroscience. The University of Würzburg provides a dynamic and supportive research environment, fostering close collaborations across psychology, neuroscience, neurology, and psychiatry with cutting-edge facilities, including access to 3T- and 7T-MRI scanners, EEG, eye-tracking, cutting-edge neuromodulation approaches and psychophysiology.

The University of Würzburg is an equal opportunity employer. As such, we explicitly encourage applications from qualified women. Severely handicapped applicants will be given preferential consideration in the case of broadly equal suitability, ability and professional achievements.
